Nordic TV when you live abroad

Swedes in Spain, Norwegians in Thailand, Danes in Dubai, Finns in Florida. The same subscription works wherever there is a decent internet connection.

Short answer

Nordkanal works in any country with a stable connection, and no dish is needed. Plan for the time difference: catch-up, 7 or 14 days depending on the plan, is what makes evening news and late matches watchable from another time zone.

Why public-service apps stop working abroad

SVT Play, NRK TV, DR TV, Yle Areena and RÚV's player restrict much of their content to their home country, because the rights they buy are national.

Inside the EU, paid streaming subscriptions have to follow you on temporary trips under the EU portability regulation. Free public-service apps are not required to, and living abroad is not a temporary trip.

Time differences from popular destinations

DestinationCompared with Stockholm
Spain (mainland)same
Canary Islands and Portugal1 h behind
United Kingdom1 h behind
Thailand6 h ahead in winter, 5 h ahead in summer
United Arab Emirates3 h ahead in winter, 2 h ahead in summer
USA, East Coast6 h behind

The USA changes clocks on different dates from Europe, so for a few weeks in spring and autumn the gap is an hour smaller. Finland is an hour ahead of Stockholm, so add one hour to every figure if you follow Finnish channels.

Connection quality abroad

Distance from the Nordics matters less than the quality of your local line. Our servers stand in Stockholm, Frankfurt and Amsterdam, and serve viewers in any country.

The problem we see most is shared Wi-Fi in holiday complexes and rented flats. Full HD needs 8 Mbit/s at the very least and 15 to be comfortable. Bring a streaming stick, and use a cable to the router if you can.

Setting up from abroad

Nothing differs from setting up at home: the login works the same way in every country. Set the device to the local time zone and the guide follows; if it is off, use the EPG offset in the player.

Questions and answers

Does Nordic IPTV work outside the Nordics?

Yes. You need a stable internet connection; the country does not matter.

Can I watch Nordic news live from Spain?

Yes, in real time. Mainland Spain shares a time zone with Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen.

How do I handle the time difference in Asia?

Use catch-up. Three- and six-month plans keep 7 days, twelve months keeps 14. The test and the one-month plan have none.

Do I need a satellite dish?

No. Everything comes over the internet connection.

Spend 3 € before you spend 80 €.

The test runs for 48 hours on one screen and stops by itself. Put it over a weekend with a match on, so you test the service at its busiest.
